A furniture designer, a digital artist and a glass sculptor have combined to showcase their latest works for the opening exhibition of Shanghai Creative Window - a new exhibition space in a trendy complex on Huaihai Road M.
All three artists have Chinese roots and a Western educational background.
They have all excelled in their own fields by combining traditional Chinese culture with modern Western ideas.
Born in the Philippines, Kenneth Cobonpue started in design in 1987 and has been acclaimed for his innovative use of materials and his fresh ideas in furniture design.
His mother, Betty Cobonpue, is also a designer famous for devising new techniques in working with rattan.
One of Cobonpue's designs on display is a sofa titled "Yin and Yang." Natural and dyed rattan splits are wrapped over a frame of steel and wicker supported by stainless steel leg.
"The sofa is an invention of the West while rattan and wicker are materials of the East," explains Yu Yeping from the exhibition organizer, the Shanghai Creative Industry Center. "It's what happens when Eastern designers meet Western ideas - that is exactly the idea of this exhibition."
